Following her sell out show at The Louisiana, Bristol this weekend, I was lucky enough to catch up with her for a quick 5 mins...
Hi Fenne, what an amazing set, how did you think it went?
I’m glad you enjoyed it, I think it went really well! Well, it seemed to anyway!
How has the tour gone so far? Is this the third date?
This isn’t the tour! These are just random gigs before we go on tour.
Right! So this is kind of the warm up leg?
Yeah, Kinda the first lap. It’s going really well, every gig has sold out so far. It’s amazing, I’m learning to play with a band because I’ve never played with a band before!
I know you’ve been living in Bristol for just over a couple of years now, so does Bristol feel like home now? Does it influence your songwriting?
Yeah, to the point where I’m bored of it! No, I’m not really, I’m really comfortable here. I love it. It’s like a hug in a city, it’s so lovely! After being on tour I come back not thinking I’ve missed it until I see, the Bear Pit for example and can’t help think ’aww, I love you!’
So how does it feel to play a sold out show here, you’re adopted home?
All the people I pick out in the crowd, they’re all my mates so it great for them to see me as something other than just a sad girl with a guitar! It’s just really lovely and I always feel so relaxed when I play in Bristol, I can say what I want! I worry than London audiences are just ‘too cool’. It’s just like an embrace, like visiting your parents house and being able to get away with just being yourself!
Since you’ve been in Bristol do you think it’s influenced your writing at all?
Oh, massively. All the songs on the new album, they’re all about one person I met when I moved to Bristol. So that was an influence in itself, then all my mates are in noise bands and guitar bands, using loads of pedals so I want to experiment like them too.
Back to the tour for a second, of the dates coming up in Germany, Netherlands and Belgium are there any venues or cities you’re looking forward to playing?
I’m playing at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. It’s legendary, it’s where Prince played his last show.
That’s pretty much it from me, thanks for your time!
Not at all, thanks for wanting my time!
Good luck for the rest of the tour and we’ll see you again in April when you’re at The Thekla.
Yeah, for sure.
